Secret 7 1.2

Took another one of my concepts further using Illustrator:

Drew simple facial features in a minimalist style and used a triadic colour scheme. I didn't use any fill because I wanted to keep the contours. I didn't include the ear because it wouldn't have benefited the composition so I used a wavy vertical line to lead the audiences eye up and down the composition and fill the white space.

It could be a bold move submitting such a minimalist composition for Tame Impala because their psychedelic sound is reflected a lot in Podjasjsky's past album artwork. If the judges see a minimalist piece it could draw there attention to the new approach.

LYRICS

Someone said they left together
I ran out the door to get her

She was holding hands with Trevor

Not the greatest feeling ever

Said, "Pull yourself together

You should try your luck with Heather"

Then I heard they slept together

Oh, the less I know the better
The less I know the better

Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side
No surprise when you're on his shoulder like every night
Oh my love, can't you see a child on my mind
Don't suppose we could convince your lover to change his mind
So goodbye

She said, "It's not now or never
Wait ten years, we'll be together"
I said, "Better late than never
Just don't make me wait forever"
Don't make me wait forever
Don't make me wait forever

Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side?
I don't suppose you could convince your lover to change his mind

I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your face, now I can't erase
Giving in to all his bullshit
Is this what you want, is this who you are?
I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your eyes turn away from mine
Oh, sweet darling, where he wants you
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"

The song is clearly a personal and fragile relationship that's breaking away because of people moving on. There is evidence of desperation and frustration from the narrator to try and be with the girl he wants.

Created more concepts based on the lyrics and message:

ENZYMES

Enzymes are biological molecules (proteins) that act as catalysts and help complex reactions occur everywhere in life.

Related the song to enzymes because they can only work if the substrate and the enzyme are suited/fit together. Almost like a puzzle, this is referred to as 'lock and key':

The substrate needs to correct enzyme in order to bond and produce an outcome and I think there is potential for creating a composition that suggests a relationship and also a relationship that isn't working out.

DENATURED ENZYMES

Enzymes can only work if the conditions are specifically suited to that enzyme. For example:

The temperature has been raised above optimum which means the enzyme has become denatured and can no longer bind.

I can relate this to the story/message from the song as the girl or guy is 'denatured' due to the fact the girl doesn't want to be with the boy YET or ever. The scientific example of how enzymes work are very simple and concise to make it easy for people to learn and understand. I'm not sure a literal presentation is relevant for the cover because it's very concise and unrelated to music. However as I have seen before, ambiguous album covers are often very successful.

Sketches:

Experimenting with different shapes that have the potential to fit together - Like a puzzle. Geometric and natural shapes can be balanced or abstract which leaves a lot of scope for concepts. Inspired by Matisse's paper cut outs:

Used contour lines that follow each other in order to suggest a map or maze. I wanted to keep the lines loose and natural to connote the unpredictability of the song.

Used this example of how enzymes work as inspiration for a new composition because I like the geometric, circular shapes as they are wholesome and balanced.

Wanted to use the circle as a centre piece of the composition and then use hexagons moving towards the gap so that they're about to fit together into the gap provided. However, one of the shapes is the wrong size/shape to fit into the space provided. This will suggest that the other shape isn't suited for the composition and ultimately makes the audience think about why it's there.

As I was sketching out these concepts, I gained more and more ideas and my concept grew. Similar to the puzzle, I looked at childrens sorting toys:

Simply use an image of a child sorting toy box but have one of the blocks completely the wrong shape/size. Potentially:
  • Cigarettes
  • Sexual object
  • Juxtaposition
  • Food
If I was to take this concept forward I would like to find a toy that I can photograph professionally.

From one day of sketching out ideas and discussing concepts with people has produced a lot of potential ideas that I want to take further.
