Secret 7 1.4

Looked for other examples of enzymes to inspire more abstract or realistic ideas.

Very basic and geometric shapes that remind me of pixels on an old video game. It is a a simple visual explanation of the enzyme process and represents the message and lyrics in the song.

I am going to consider using this basic example but slightly changing the shapes and colour scheme because I think it's simplicity will make the connection to the song easier to interpret. I could even keep text in there but reword it so there are no copyright issues.

Drew out the composition in the style of someone writing it up in a school book. It also allowed me to experiment with the shape of the enzyme and molecules:

The hand written text is rough and in note form to keep it brief so the audience finds it easy to understand.

Using Illustrator, I tried creating an accurate, geometric outcome composition based on the same composition:

The geometric shapes remind me of pixels and are simple representations of the enzyme and molecules. I decided not to label the composition but use colour theory instead. As you can see the purple shapes are the right shape and size to fit into the space provided inside the enzyme and therefor become a match.

GREEN: The green box represents the enzyme itself, I chose green because it is a natural colour and can connote fertility, stability and endurance. This is relevant because the the green enzyme represents the woman.

PURPLE: The purple shapes represent the molecules that are able to fit into the enzyme and therefor activate it to produce a product. I chose purple because it is complimentary with the green and connotes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. Light purple especially evokes romantic and nostalgic feelings which is relevant because they represent the partner suited the the woman (enzyme).

RED: The red cross symbolises the denatured/unsuited molecule that's unable to fit into the 'lock' of the enzyme. I chose red because it is a powerful colour that evokes passion, desire and love. This is appropriate for this shape because it represents the narrative in the song as he is unable to match with the woman he desires.

The simplicity of the composition is pleasing and I think the colour choice is a big influence. Having limited content focuses the audiences attention which will ultimately force them to think about each aspect.

Simply placing a small image in relation to the space available focuses the audiences attention in the centre. This is inspiring to me because it gives me confidence to be as limited in content.

To further illustrate the connotations of the song, I have given an example of an 'enzyme' that has matched with a molecule. I thought this would make the concept clearer for the audience.

Placing around with the shapes allowed me to create more conceptual compositions based on the subject of love and heart ache. Below, the enzyme has its 'back' to the molecule, suggesting avoidance or even unrecognition:

The shapes are geometric because I wanted to make the enzyme/puzzle concept clear to the audience. However, I don't think it is typical for a Tame Impala cover because it isn't expressive like their music. I want to organise a crit for this concept to see if people think it's appropriate.

The gif below is for a scientific program that allows people to analyse and manipulate the behaviour of enzymes and molecules:

I really like the simplicity of the shapes and colours and if I was to take a screen shot it could create a potential composition. I can experiment with collage and drawing.

This concept also has potential to be used for John Lennon's - Imagine because the molecules can represent 'the people'.

More scientific images and examples of enzymes:

An accurate representation of what an enzyme looks like and how it can the particles work inside it. This provides me with the opportunity to be more expressive with my designs by using materials such as paint, ink and printing techniques.

Use monoprinting to create texture resembling this realistic image of enzymes:

Reminds me of telephone cable - Could put something tangled up in it and photograph using the photography lighting studio facilities. Complicated structure symbolises the relationship issues picked up in the song.
