Design Principles Publication 2.2

EVALUATION

Using the aim to inform and entertain was something I identified early in the brief which influenced my concepts from the start. I aimed for my publication to be engaging and I feel that I have applied the right techniques and processes to achieve this. Using a range of coloured stock makes looking at the publication intriguing so people will want to pick it up in a shop. I kept the typography as limited as possible because I didn’t want to distract the audience from the content. Using the 6x6 grid system made me consider spacing on the page, this was really useful for considering the binding allowance. Creating mockups was a really beneficial process that allowed me to solve problems effectively. I am pleased with the cover because it demonstrates figure and ground which is a Gestalt Principle using an engaging technique.

Applying colour theory to my publication made it more engaging because I had the knowledge to consider what colours compliment and contrast with each other to create compositions using the layered effect.

There is still a lot of room for improvement as I feel I am still learning the basics to typesetting and page composition. The techniques and processes that I chose were relevant, however I could have used a die cutter instead of the laser cutter to avoid having the burn marks on the back of the paper. This is something I will consider in the future as my design develops and my work becomes prepared for industry. I would have liked to have experimented more with the size and orientation of the publication, as well as stock choices because that would allow me to broaden my knowledge of design to create more professional outcomes.
