Create an immersive and engaging screen based user experience for a media of choice. The brief requires my outcome to work on a global scale, making sure I consider cultural and societal influences.
User Experience:
The overall experience of a person using a product such as a website or computer application, especially in terms of how easy or pleasing it is to use.
EMOTIVE
User Interface:
The means by which the user and a computer system interact, in particular the use of input devices and software.
Mindmap:
In a group of 4, we noted down user interface platforms that we use:
Working in a large group gave us all a broad range of platforms based on all of our experiences.
Smart Boards
We all had experience with using these during primary/secondary school and decided to look closer at the use of smart boards in the context of education. We identified the user experience was exciting and engaging for children which made them want to come up to the classroom and learn. Using the interactive pen provided more possibilities and solutions to engaging learners.
Further development:
- The pen can be used to navigate through pages, presentations and websites
- Laser pointer
Uber - Smart Phone App
Widely used throughout cities providing a convenient solution to ordering a taxi. The user experience is positive as the user can see the taxi's location on a map, increasing the excitement of ordering a taxi. Particularly for students, getting a taxi is almost a treat so seeing the progress of the taxi builds expectation and excitement. Seeing the taxi's location is also user friendly as the individual doesn't have to wait outside expecting the taxi, instead they can wait til they can see the car close to their location on the map.
Negatives:
Only card payments - No cash
Need internet
Need battery life
Drones
Companies such as Amazon have been developing a new service that uses drones to deliver packages, instead of traditional postal services. This will ultimately remove a lot of traffic from our roads. As this is a new concept and still in development, there is opportunity to design an interface in the form of an App for this service, making it a quick and easy process. The experience will make the user feel excited because they are using progressive and unique technology.
Negatives:
Noise pollution
Privacy issues
Security
ATM Machines
Commonly used by the public, we identified that they are outdated due to contactless payments becoming an emerging trend. The machines are often slow and time consuming to use which ultimately increases vulnerability as people are becoming less likely to part with their belongings, especially something as important as a bank card. To overcome this, there is potential to make the bank machines contactless or even use face recognition technology. The machines also prompts questions such as 'would you like to view your balance?' or 'would you like an advice slip?' even when 'Cash Only' is selected. This prolongs the withdrawal process making it an inconvenience. The user wants to feel safe because they are dealing with finances so a concise, flowing interface would speed up the process.
Emotive
User interface can be an emotive experience. Here is an examples of positive user experience that I find reminiscent:
- Turning on PS1
Hearing the unique sound and visuals reminds me of memories from my childhood when I used to own one. This is an example of a successful user experience because it has stood the test of time.
Potentially, this is down to the multi-sensory experience:

Mixed media:
- Image
- Audio
- Video
Repeating engaging visuals with moving image and sound every time the app/console/website is turned on/used creates consistency so the audience becomes familiar with the interface. This can be used to create a friendly tone of voice/experience.
