OUGD503 - Responsive - Collaborative Practice - Submission Boards and Evaluation

Booked the photography studio so that the presentation of our physical outcomes were high quality and professional. Me, Tom and Sammy were present in the studio, offering suggestions on how we could photograph our work and combining forces. Collating the large volume of images was time consuming however I selected the best ones to take forward.

Made sure I had an input into the design boards, selecting and curating the best images to add. I used my language skills to create the copy of the design boards, making sure that I am objective and concise. This is important for the submission boards because they need to inform the judges on our concept clearly and effectively. I used my language skills to create the type in a succinct and objective fashion so that the judges can interpret our concept and campaign easily and effectively.

The use of Fira Sans is a typeface developed specifically for reading on screen by Erik Spierkermann. This is an important consideration because the judges are likely to view the submissions on screen.

2: Clearly defined the concept

There is a maximum of 7 slides but as we have been so concise and our concept is structured, we were able to use these to showcase our photographed products as full bleed, high impact images:

Evaluation

Sharing different work that we like with one another at the start of the project allowed us to identify a common aesthetic which was really useful for making sure everyone was on the same page.

I feel that I bought a lot of conceptual ideas to the group early on in the project and I really enjoyed brainstorming ideas with an illustrator and animator because I like determining a visual style. As the project progressed, we relied heavily on Annie to provide the illustrations to which the typography could be applied. The organic characteristics of Gotham leant itself to the bulbous forms which created a complimentary composition. All credit to Annie for supplying the majority of the material which lead into all elements of the submission. It was great to have Annie on the team as she is clearly a talented illustrator particularly with shape and colour which informed an umbrella style across the whole campaign. Working with a creative team has been really influential as I have learnt new techniques and processes, particularly within animation which I have really enjoyed and would like to do again. I am pleased that we decided to create a stop motion animation because the tangible aesthetic transfers well over screen. Working with Tom was great because his knowledge on how to animate helped us to identify the style to which we could rely on. His specialist skills and eagerness to get involved in all areas of the project made him an active member of the team and allowed us to overcome barriers effectively. Having Tom's expert knowledge on animation proved extremely valuable because he was able to identify methods of animation that suited the project aesthetic and were also techniques and processes required to complete it.

Working with another graphic designer made the decision process quick and effective because we could offer live feedback which was really beneficial when we were adding the type to the animation. All members of the group stuck to the contract as we all fulfilled our roles and responsibilities which shows the positive group dynamic. We were all very punctual and met up on a regular basis to discuss the concept and gain feedback on our designs which was an exciting and productive way of working because we could enforce all of our creative talent to solve the problem. My time management throughout this particular project was good, however balancing and struggling with the workload with other competition briefs made it hard for me to mock up my ideas so it is fair enough that some of my designs weren't considered. In the future, I intend to be more practical to avoid this.

My role within the group allowed me to voice my opinions on the art direction, as well as develop the concept into something that can be applied across both print and screen. I made sure that we considered time management by booking print slots and the photography studio well in advance so that we could professionally present our work. I took the time to consider the brand guidelines provided by ROH which shows how our campaign is professional and represents the face of the brand. I really enjoyed getting involved with the painting of the animation frames because it gave me the opportunity work manually which is something that I miss within my practice. This also demonstrated the positive group dynamics because the work load was shared across all 4 members of the group.

The outcome is definitely the most developed and well executed project so far because working as a group allowed us to share responsibilities and ultimately get more done. The concept has transferred well over the numerous deliverables which shows how informed our concept was.
