OUGD505 - Leeds Public Spaces - Cycling Editorial and Branding Research

In order to gain more typographic inspiration, I referred to cycling magazines. Cycling has a large following throughout editorial and it has become a contemporary and trendy subject.

Contemporary typeface works cohesively with a range of covers. 

Rapha


Script typeface with subtle bloated elements which increases legibility. The type also suggest movement due to the fact it is slanted. 

Slanted type is a common theme with cycling branding which creates movement and speed:





Example of a serif within a contemporary context. The contrasting hair-pin typeface is appropriate for cycling because it connotes both road bikes and mountain bikes. The heavy strokes suggest strength and power of mountain bikes whilst the hairpin lines refer to the elegant and streamline road bikes.




This research has shown that cycling has a definite place within contemporary culture which is highlighted by the fact it is a feature within independent publishing.
