Extended Practice - 10 Briefs - Initial ideas

An initial statement of intent/position statement will be produced which will clearly identify and articulate the following:

Themes, subject matter and lines of enquiry.
- Print, editorial, branding

Research methodologies.
Practical development (media, methods, productions skills).
Contextual and theoretical references.
Approaches to documentation/recording.
Reflection and evaluation.
Project management (including a clear time plan)

Must be of my own interest
Be current and real
Convince someone to..

What is the focus of my work as a whole?
Why am I doing each brief? How does it relate to my overall practice?
What research (primary/secondary) will I carry out?
What practical methods/processes will I need to access to? Materials

Chose briefs based on my personal interests and subjects that encouraged experimental and process orientated outcomes such as agriculture and music.

Cultural events such as exhibitions to suit ambiguity and abstraction

Intend to complete a live branding project to test my practical skills and imbed my outcome into a practical context. I have identified an interest in exhibition branding and events therefore it would be a great opportunity to get people and professionals involved.

Process orientated
Experimental

Focus on expanding my practice into a wider contexts such as print and digital in order to broaden my skills and gain exposure. I must consider the potential of current/future technology in order to apply transferable solutions over a broad demographic. Through the two years I have been naturally drawn to print media, however the digital industry is at the forefront of graphic design therefore I intend to collaborate with digital designers in order to increase my knowledge and understanding of design for screen. This will demonstrate a wide range of skills within my portfolio.

Push my practical and conceptual practice forward

IDEAS:

Calendar

Influenced by my COP reading; 'The Debate...' which compares two designers' (Jan Tschichold and Wim Crouwel) contrasting methods of practice. They both have the task of creating a calendar, both of which take different approaches and push graphic design.

p.93
Calendars are often a PR tool
'A perfect playground for printers and designers, calendars allow them to show the scope of their expertise.'

Wim Crouwel:

1965 - Erven E. Van De Geer Printing Firm

Functional
Consistent

Van Toorn

1972 - 1973
Mart. Spruijt Printing Firm

Widely experimental
Range of shapes and sizes - 1969/70 was round

Objectives:

Practical
Influences society positively
Experiment with graphic design principles inspired by W.C/JVT
Exercise what I have learnt from past two years in order to make it as professional as possible
MUST be practical and affordable
Professional standard to be sold
Get them on the market

Development
Could even push it forward onto digital and create a calendar with improved user experience.
