OUGD503 - Responsive - Collaborative Practice - Frame painting and Gifs

Annie's style of illustration takes the bloated forms of a ballerina which are suggestive of movement and abstraction, embracing the artistic flair of ballet:

Example of how type can be combined with the image:
Annie has gone the extra mile by starting to think about how the glossary of terms can be combined with the imagery.

Colour:

Annie's experience and knowledge about colour has proved really beneficial.

Collage:

Gouache Paintings:

The unique quality of using gouache paints is that they dry opaque, meaning the brush strokes aren't visible and a solid layer of colour is presented.

Annie's initial drawings provide the team with a visual style to follow and we are able to move forward into creating the animation. Speaking as a group with Tom, we discussed which animation method would be best suited for Annie's drawings and considering the amount of time we have left.

Animation Method: We debated whether the animation should be collage based, where the separate elements can be moved below a copy stand, or painting each individual frame. Tom confirmed that painting each individual frame would be best as it would be more accurate and consistent. Any mistakes or further movements can be edited on animation software which demonstrates Tom's specialist knowledge.

I was surprised by the fact that the animation only needs 3-4 frames per scene because the sequence can be repeated. Again, we were all conscious that Annie was given a large work load because she is responsible for the drawings and paintings, therefor we organised an afternoon where we could all come and help to paint Annie's drawings.

First scene shows the production of the ballet:

Creating a production line for us all to fill in the colours and sharing the work load speeded up the process of creating the frames which would have taken Annie a long time. I was keen to explore other mediums other than the computer so I made myself available for further painting and preparation for the animation. This put us ahead of schedule and we passed the frames over to Tom to animate. I have enjoyed learning more about the animation process as I imagined we would have had to produce a lot more frames. Tom's specialist insight provided us with the ability to immediately take these frames into animation.

Linking these Gif's up as a sequence provides us with the production scene. Sammy and I can now take these animations and add the typography to narrate the animation.

I am really pleased with the progress that we have made and the group dynamic is still strong. We are all enthusiastic about the project which makes it a lot easier for us all to communicate confidently with one another. So far we have all been able to attend meeting sessions without any cancellation which is made easier by the fact that we are all dedicated to our practice.
