Design Stage

This was mine and Sammy's opportunity to combine and apply our typographic, aesthetic and design knowledge for the promotional material. Our role is to bring together the artistic material and present it in the form of:
  • Posters
  • Glossary Cards
  • Online
  • Social Media
Glossary Cards

The cards are

Back of the Cards

Sammy provided great knowledge on colour theory to which he applied full bleed to the back of the cards. The use of swatches aloud us to accurately apply the colours to the type and background.

Using Gotham and Times New Roman we created a clean and simple layout with all elements justified to the left. We made sure we included the current ROH branding to show how they can be used in the real world showing our awareness of professionalism.

Front of Card

Sammy mocked up some concepts for the front of the cards, proving a proactive member of the team.
Annie suggested editing the tones of the scans in Photoshop to enhance the colours. The illustrations lend themselves to poster design as the shapely forms provide room for the typography to fit in and around the shapes:

Annie is currently in the process of drawing up more of the illustrations which we can add to the back of the cards. We have agreed that their will be 10 cards.

Animation Narrative

Sammy and I worked together to create some initial typographic compositions. We aim for the text to compliment the illustrative style so that it doesn't intrude on the content. I suggested using the type on path tool so that the type can be set in a playful and dynamic manner, appropriate for the art form.

Text for the animation:

The current typeface used by The Royal Opera House is provided in the brief package.

Gotham
Times New Roman

Crowd

Setting the type in the illustrations proved harder than we thought because the type needs space to breath in order for it to be clearly legible. The animation is busy as there are a lot of moving components. We explored a range of positions, separating each lexis across the composition in order to lead the eye around the page:

Using the type on path tool to curve the type compliments Annie's organic illustration style. I believe the '...' leading off the page will create a flowing commentary between each scene.

Orchestra

The composition lends itself to having type in the centre as the head of the violin will be subtly shaking, surrounding the type and making it the focal point of the composition. We offset 'fiddles' to the right to suit the expressive style which makes it appropriate to break traditional rules.

Conductor

Use of blue colour picked from the gouache
Circle in the centre of the composition unifies the arched type.

Final composition is set in the centre of the page to make it the focal point. Seeing solid text over the textured gouache creates a subtle contrast which adds to aesthetic value.

These are only initial ideas and a lot of the typesetting will need to be a lot tighter and more developed before submission. Sammy and I have combined our graphic design knowledge and we are both contributing to the design process. To achieve this, we take it in terms to design and offer live feedback, this process makes decision making a quick process and we are able to explore a range of variables.

Perhaps combining both Gotham and Times New Roman throughout each statement would be appropriate because it would create a contemporary edge which will be attractive to the young culturally engaged target audience. I aim to create some compositions using both typefaces and show them to Sammy and the group to gain feedback.
