In order to establish whether to take surfing forward, I sent Andrew Cotton an email asking if I could talk to him about UK surfing and whether it has a surf culture. I have been struggling to find many articles discussing the issue so Cotton's perspective should be my best option as he will be speaking from experience. Cotton is a hugely well renowned in the surfing community for his big wave surfing as well as being a plumber. He originally started surfing at the age of 7 and has since pioneered big waves in Ireland but soon his attention was drawn to Nazare, Portugal. Nazare has one of the interesting natural reef which produces the huge barrels as a result of a massive storm. His effort put him on a shortlist for surfing's Oscars, the Billabong XXL awards, for the biggest wave.
Cotton managed to get back to me and said he was keen to talk so I have prepared some questions.
CULTURE: The ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society.
Potential Questions
- First of all, do you think the UK has a surf culture? Is it underrepresented?
- Not a televised sport and rarely in the media - Why do you think this is?
- What do you think about surfing being added to the Tokyo Olympic games? Will this be good for the sport?
- How successful do you think surf editorial is?
- Storm maps - Reliable?
- How can I raise awareness of surfing in the UK?
