As we agreed in the second meeting, me and Sammy have been set the task of producing some story boards that communicate the themes and concerns that we aim to focus on:
ATHLETICISM
Relating the exaggerated and dynamic movements from the dancers with sport will allow the audience to better relate to the impressive 'superhuman' movements. 100m sprinter in the starting blocks have to exert huge amounts of explosive power in order to get out of the blocks as fast as they can. Once the athlete has left the blocks, the scene will change to show a dancer performing a jump across the stage. The video will pause and zoom in so that the audience can see the dynamic movement and then annotations will come up describing the movement. This will increase the audiences understanding of ballet making it more relevant to them and breaking down the negative barriers. Once the dancer lands, they will be on stage, putting the figure in the context of ballet.
Similar concept using the weight lifter as a narrative. Replacing the weights with a dancer and annotating the movement.
We thought that the action from boxing is similar to two dancers on stage as the movement are often dynamic and require footwork and movement. This can then be related to the human themes such as love, anger, hate and jealousy etc.
PRODUCTION
In order to show the audience that ballet is not just about people prancing around, we decided to focus on all of the production features that help to make a ballet production:
Ticket man
Orchestra
Conductor
Lighting
Sound
Curtain
Props
Costumes
The story board we produced shows short clips of each of these roles in preparation, just before the performance starts.
We will discuss our concepts with both Tom and Annie when we next meet in order to determine solid narrative so that we can progress.
