OUGD504 - Design for Print - 500 Handmade Books, Inspiring Interpretations of a Timeless Form - Lark Books

I used the publication to look for inspiration about binding methods and adapting the form of the publication to support my concept.

Paula Jull, And Now Your Local Forecast, 2001

Jull has coptic bound her publication inside a circuit board which is appropriate because the publication focuses on a message that expresses hope in the ability of science to inform us and predict our earth’s future. Topic has informed the production.

Ingrid Hein Borch, 2006

Borch has cut into the cover and through the pages so the publication has two spines. The coptic binding has been highlighted by the contrasting stitch.

Crystal Cawley, Stone Women, 2006

Geraldine A. Newfry, 2005

The coptic stitch seems to be a popular choice for bespoke book binders because of its adaptable qualities. The stitch can accommodate a range of thicknesses of stock and other materials apart from paper.

The majority of the publications covered in the book are bespoke and limited edition. This is partly due to the time consuming processes and techniques used to create them which adds desire. The limited amount of written content makes the square publication predominantly visual so the audience can use it as a look book for reference.
