OUGD504 - Design for Print - The Art Form

The-Art-Form is a limited edition publication about art and artists. Each artist covered in the magazine have filled out a form in their own unique way, asking questions about themselves and their practice.

Front Cover:

Over the full bleed image is a basic summary of the content and commercial information such as price and edition. Normally, this content is contained inside the publication, however Andrew Townsend has immediately informed the audience. The upper case type is easily legible due to the clear digital format of each character, however it isn't too overwhelming so the audiences attention is predominantly focused on the artwork.

Townsend's typesetting is well considered as he has manages to successfully apply text and image together by taking advantage of the space available. The two type sizes help the audience to determine what the page is about and then the smaller copy contains the information - Townsend has followed Vignelli's principle of two copy sizes.

There is some consistency with typesetting when Townsend is introducing an artist:

Evidence of a grid system in use which creates a professional consistency throughout:

Highlighted the green line as this is where the type finishes and image begins for each chapter, this makes it recognisable for the audience.

The artists were allowed to answer the questionnaire however they wanted. As you can see Ian Davenport has handwritten his content which is more personal for the audience as they get to see the artists original handwriting. This is appropriate for the publication because it is informing other creatives on the artists personal work and life. Davenport's handwriting isn't as legible as a digital typeface, however it forces the audience to change their style of reading.

Typesetting on and off the image creates cohesion between the text and image. The typography is inconsistent throughout the publication due to the artists interpretation of the brief. However the final page continues to use the original digital style typography, bringing to whole publication to a cohesive ending:

I aim to use a consistent typeface for the information like Townsend because it creates cohesion throughout the publication. However,  the content will be predominantly image based.
