OUGD504 - Design for Print - Primary Concepts

In order to decide on a concept, I have researched into Bristol so that I can critically analyse the themes that I captured when photographing the type, alongside the context. This will ultimately give me a strong platform to work from when developing the content, stock choices and production methods.

To gather information about Bristol, I used online sources such as 'Visit Bristol' because it is a trustworthy site that narrows down key information.

Key Points

Multi-cultural
400,000 residents
Famous for its art - Music
In 2015 it was given the Green Capital Award - The only UK city to receive a National award.
Trading since the Romans
Residents of Bristol are called Bristolians

Considering my knowledge on Bristol and feedback from my presentation, I brainstormed some potential concepts for my publication that I can take forward.

Early Concepts
  • IN/OUT - Presenting the type in and out of context by tracing the letterform highlights the features of each character. Thinking about the target audience for this concept, it would be appropriate for creatives and designers interested in the world of typography. I have already taken the type out of context because it's a photograph, instead of seeing it in real life. This will provide me with an opportunity to show the type in a different context.
  • A guide to Bristol's typography - Using infographics such as maps to pin point where each image is taken and explaining the context. I want to produce a unique product and I know that tourist guides have been done numerous times so I aim to move away from this concept. The target audience for this publication would be tourists and designers. The tourists can use it to locate key points of interest around the city.
  • Environment - I photographed type in a range of different environments and when I was collating my images, I noticed that the type had certain themes and characteristics for that environment. For example, the town centre has a plethora of sans-serif typefaces where as the graveyard hosts gothic serif typefaces. Considering an audience, designers and people interested in typography would be an appropriate target because it will allow me to use jargon and present the information in an informative and entertaining manner.
  • Celebrate Bristol's diverse culture through typography - Creating a publication that showcases Bristol's typography would be aimed at the 'Bristolians'. Targeting the publication at Bristolians will allow me to use a personal approach as the audience will already have knowledge about the city.
Feedback

I organised a small crit group that I could present my concepts and findings to further inform my decision. I am struggling to find a strong target audience and purpose for my publication so I will use this opportunity to develop.

After showing all of my pictures and explaining my 4 primary concepts, I have received some constructive feedback. Everyone shared an interest in the IN/OUT concept because it creates opportunity to change peoples perceptions of typography. People also liked the fact that it celebrates and reflects the diverse culture and typography in Bristol which will provide opportunity for visually stimulating pages.

Everyone agreed that a guide to Bristol typography would be a bit dry because it has already been done before.

It was suggested that I could incorporate the environmental concept into the IN/OUT concept because they are similar and will give the audience a better understanding of Bristol.

People said that IN/OUT would be a good concept because it can inform the production of the publication. I could put 'IN' context and then display 'OUT' upside down in the publication. The audience will then clearly see the difference between type in and out of context and will have to physically move the publication. I like this concept because it involves the audience and the actual action of turning a book around already takes the publication out of context.

A problem that I was reminded of was the real purpose of the publication and the audience that it is targeting. A strong concept will inform the production of the publication but it needs to be well considered in order for the book to be commercially successful. My concept of IN/OUT has the potential to attract a narrow audience, to overcome this I could potentially make it a free publication as more people would have access to it and therefor exposure would increase. This means the publication would need an entertaining yet informative tone of voice.

Another way I can present the two contexts is to have 'IN' physically inside the book and then the reader can fold out the page to reveal the type out of context, therefor presenting the information outside of the publication's context. These two examples show how my concept is influencing the production of the publication.
