OUGD504 - Design for Print - Crit/Concept Feedback

I pitched my concept to a large group of people so that I could get feedback from a broad range of creative people. I gave the group an overview of Bristol and what I found and how that informed my concept of IN/OUT which gained positive feedback as people liked the idea of seeing the letterforms out of context.

I asked whether I should produce a free publication because it would increase readership or a bespoke art/coffee table book because that will effect who my publication is designed for. It was suggested that I produced a cheap, free publication to accompany the bespoke book as this will give a taste of the content inside the bespoke publication. This will ultimately increase awareness of the publication. Reflecting on this proposal, it would reach more of an audience however I will need to consider the amount of time that I have. I can create the free publication which can then be sewn into the larger bespoke publication when binding. This would be a unique selling point as a free booklet or poster that can be removed from the publication can be put up as a poster, etc.

Creating a bespoke publication will be time consuming and expensive, especially for mass production so I aim to make it a limited edition publication which will increase the value. I like the idea of including a free poster or zine inside the publication that gives a taster or provides the highlights of the bespoke book because it will be easily accessible rather than a heavy hard back publication. Something free will also convince the target audience into buying the limited edition publication.

Chosen Concept

Rationale

Capturing Bristol's diverse environment through typography provided me with a broad range of images from a range of different contexts. This gives me the opportunity to produce a publication that explores typography in and out of context by focusing and distorting the form and function of the type.

Concept

Change peoples perception of typography by juxtaposing their environments and production methods. The form and function of the publication will be influenced by the diverse type I managed to capture.

Purpose

Celebrate Bristol's diverse culture and creative field whilst inspiring the audience on its context with written and visual content.

Target Audience

Designers, Bristolians and people interested in the world of design and typography.
