The principle is that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose. I have found some examples of well considered publications that follow this principle.
Managed to get my hands on a copy of G.F Smith's complete selection of papers. I am impressed by how the book can contain so many pages, yet be so easy to work with.
The perfect bound book is very flexible which allows the publication to be folded flat, this shows that the binding method was well considered as it is very practical.
Example of the publication fully open:
The publication takes advantage of the whole page so the audience can clearly see the stock and analyse its weight and texture/finish. This binding method would be really useful for a publication that requires a lot of information because less room is wasted in the bind and fold.
G.F Smith have created a publication that is used by many graphic designers because it is so easy and pleasant to use which shows they have considered their target audiences (designers) needs. This is a prime example of form follows function because the purpose of the publication has informed the production.
Another good example of this is a publication called Production for Graphic Designers.
Now in its fifth edition, this book covers the most up-to-date technological advances in graphics and print production, fully explaining all the standard prepress and printing processes. The target audience is for designers because the information is detailed and up to date so they can refer to it when working.
4th Edition - 2005
Alan Pipes
The front cover is a wrap around screen shot of the publication on InDesign which effectively shows the audience what the publication is about.
The publication is an A4 double page spread which allows the text to be larger and legible. The detailed diagrams and images demonstrate technical information to go alongside the written content for reference. This ultimately makes the content easier to digest because of its clear formatting.
The page composition is simple and effective with 8pt type and the content is still legible, however the large amount of copy can look daunting. However for this publication it is appropriate because the content goes into a lot of detail as it is relied upon by many designers.
The 5th Edition of Production for Graphic Designers:
Again, the cover provides all the information for the processes and materials used to create the publication. This is suitable for its target audience as designers will be able to understand the jargon. The gloss finish on the text takes advantage of print media by making it more tactile and pleasant to hold and touch. It is an example of a printing process that is explained in the book, this creates a cohesion between the audience and content.
The cover is made from a coated thick stock which will make the publication more durable so that it can cope with being transported in designers bags as they will require it for reference due to the helpful and informative content. The fact that the publication is an example of form following function shows how simple and minimalist page composition can be and still impact its audience. This is also appropriate because the information needs to be clear.
