OUGD603 - Calendar - Further Research

Looked at the definition and history of the calendar in more detail and discovered the Almanac:

An annual publication that includes information like weather forecasts, farmers' planting dates, tide tables, and other tabular data often arranged according to the calendar. Celestial figures and various statistics are found in almanacs, such as the rising and setting times of the Sun and Moon, dates of eclipses, hours of high and low tides, and religious festivals.

This made me look at the concept of time from a different angle. The setting of the sun and the moon was (and in some cases still is) used to tell the time which lead me to look at lunar calendars:

The stages of the moon can help to further communicate the effect of time which will not only provide another use for the calendar but also add aesthetic value.

Potential Development:
  • Use the concept of the moon and time to inform
  • The visibility of the moon is transferred into the visibility of the typography
  • Increase size of type with size of moon
  • Colour
In order to further communicate the progress of time, I intend to find new layouts that take advantage of space:

Therese Vandling

Vandling has simplified the calendar into vertical columns, using colour and shape to identify weekends and aid the viewer. The composition provides just enough space for the user to add events and annotations.

This layout takes advantage of the entire page:
