OUGD603 - Calendar - Initial Calendar Research

Definition

Calendar: A chart or series of pages showing the days, weeks, and months of a particular year, or giving particular seasonal information.

Alamanc: An annual publication that includes information like weather forecasts, farmers' planting dates, tide tables, and other tabular data often arranged according to the calendar. Celestial figures and various statistics are found in almanacs, such as the rising and setting times of the Sun and Moon, dates of eclipses, hours of high and low tides, and religious festivals.

Ephemeris: A table or data file giving the calculated positions of a celestial object at regular intervals throughout a period.

Stendig Calendar - Massimo Vignelli

Created by Massimo Vignelli for Charles Stendig in 1966, the Stendig Calendar is the only calendar hanging in New York’s MoMA. It is constructed from tear-off sheets of 160 gsm paper, and printed in the iconic typeface Helvetica. The months randomly alternate black and white and the top binding strip has three black eyelets for easy level hanging.

The monthly calendar requires the user to tear away each month, forcing the user to interact with it whilst also reflecting the progression of time and what's in the past.

Dimensions
1219mm x 914mm
The oversized calendar gives it more presence and increases legibility from a distance however there is little room for the user to write in events/notes.

The Debate

Jan Van Toorn and Wim Crouwel's printing firm calendars:

Observations:
Clear evidence of the use of a grid in order to organise the information
Combining text and image - Layering
Variety of approaches - Weekly, monthly

DANIEL PETER — THE MONTHLY CALENDAR

Using manual printing processes to create unique shape compositions for each edition. The innovative use of the booklet takes advantage of its sequential form to provide a simple diary. Peter has used a simple square grid to provide areas for the user to annotate whilst using single letters to identify the day of the week. This minimalist style requires the user to fill in the gaps.

The project was highlighted over a range of Instagram accounts for its use of traditional printing processes. This demonstrates how using manual processes can provide aura.
