OUGD603 - Farm - 4 - Further Research

Paul Klein

Stencil

The lines running through can be manipulated to reflect the ploughing/tractor lines.
Aim to explore curvaceous simplicity of the type forms in order to see how/if I can use this to reflect the plough/tyre lines that are so prominent in the English countryside during the harvest. The arcs are similar to the lines left by vehicles turning.

It is important to pay attention to the negative space.

Geometric shapes

I traced the letterforms from Klein's stencil typeface in order to deconstruct the letterforms and manipulate them.

Cutting the letterforms out allowed me to physically create abstract compositions using sections of characters:

The thick stems and condensed serifs suggest strength and stability.

Repeat pattern created from section of 'x' resembles tyre tracks and also the head of a ripe wheat plant:

Farming Book

Old book offered to agricultural students. It offers a brief history of farming and techniques, old and new.

PLOUGH

The most important development in the history of agriculture. The seeds grow better if the soil is disturbed and turned over before planting.

Ancient Egyptians for discovered the plough. The letter 'A' was influenced by the shape of the plough. It has one extended leg. This may well explain why the Greek and Latin words for plough start with an 'A' and why 'agriculture and 'arable' also begin with 'A'.

The modern plough is simply an improved version of the Egyptian plough.

Impact of farming:
  • Created geometry to meet the needs of agriculture - Marking out boundaries and fields
  • The need to calculate the quantity and value of the grain harvest led to the development of arithmetic
  • Summer hols are so long so the boys can come back and help out with the harvest.
  • Inspired men to write songs and poetry.
